Learning the DayZ map is one of those skills that quietly changes the entire game.
When you are new, every road looks the same, every forest feels endless, and a town sign written in Cyrillic might as well be a puzzle. After enough hours, those same roads, hills, power lines, coastlines, and landmarks start telling you exactly where you are.
That is part of what makes DayZ exploration so satisfying.
There is also more than one official map to learn now. Chernarus remains the classic DayZ experience, Livonia offers a greener and more wilderness-focused survival environment, Sakhal turns cold weather into a constant threat, and another major terrain—Nasdara—is about to arrive with the Badlands expansion.

DayZ Maps at a Glance
As of October 10, 2026, three major official terrains are already available. A fourth, Nasdara, is scheduled to launch with DayZ Badlands on October 15.
| Map | Approximate Size | Environment | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chernarus | About 225 km² | Forests, coast, cities, farmland | Base game |
| Livonia | 163 km² | Dense forests, rivers, farmland | Included with base DayZ |
| Sakhal | 105 km² land; 236 km² playable including water | Snow, ice, volcanic terrain | Frostline expansion |
| Nasdara | 267 km² | Arid badlands and desert terrain | Badlands expansion, October 15, 2026 |
Chernarus’ playable terrain is roughly 15.36 × 15.36 km, or about 225 km². Livonia covers 163 km². Sakhal has roughly 105 km² of traversable land and ice, with its overall playable space reaching around 236 km² when navigable water is included.
Nasdara is significantly larger at 267 km², making the upcoming Badlands terrain another substantial world to learn.

Chernarus: The Classic DayZ Map
For many players, Chernarus simply is DayZ.
The South Zagoria region combines coastal cities, small villages, forests, industrial zones, military installations, farmland, airfields, castles, and large stretches of wilderness.
Most fresh characters begin near the southern or eastern coastline, which gives new players one immediate navigation advantage: the sea.
Once you understand the coastline, the rest of the DayZ map becomes much easier to read.
Some of the most recognizable Chernarus locations include:
- Chernogorsk
- Elektrozavodsk
- Berezino
- Svetloyarsk
- Severograd
- Novodmitrovsk
- Zelenogorsk
- NWAF
- Tisy Military Base
Chernarus is large enough that walking from one side of the map to another is a real trip, especially when you stop for food, water, ammunition, medical supplies, and player encounters along the way.

Why Chernarus Is Good for New Players
Chernarus has a lot of recognizable navigation features.
There are railroads along portions of the coast, large roads between major settlements, power lines crossing the countryside, hiking trails, distinctive hills, and plenty of town signs.
The DayZ Wiki’s navigation guide also points out that roads, railways, power lines, and settlement signs can all help survivors regain their bearings when lost.
For a first serious DayZ run, Chernarus is still a very good place to learn the basic survival loop.
Livonia: More Forest, Less Coastal Guidance
Livonia feels familiar at first, but navigation works differently.
There is no coastline helping you immediately understand where you spawned. Instead, you spend much more time reading roads, rivers, towns, forests, and natural landmarks.
The map covers approximately 163 km² and contains dense forests, overgrown fields, rivers, lakes, settlements, military areas, and large wilderness sections.
Livonia was originally sold separately, but that changed with DayZ Update 1.25 in 2024. Bohemia Interactive incorporated Livonia into the base game, meaning current base-game owners have access to it without purchasing the old standalone Livonia DLC.
What Makes Livonia Different?
Livonia generally rewards players who are comfortable living away from cities.
Hunting, fishing, navigation, shelter, and knowing when to leave a populated area become particularly important.
Major settlements include places such as Topolin, Nadbór, Gieraltów, and Sitnik, while much of the southern region becomes increasingly wild.
If Chernarus teaches you how to navigate civilization, Livonia teaches you how to survive when civilization becomes scarce.
Sakhal: The Frostline Survival Map
Sakhal changed the meaning of environmental survival in DayZ.
Released with the Frostline expansion, Sakhal is a frozen volcanic archipelago where staying warm can matter just as much as finding ammunition.
Bohemia originally planned a smaller terrain, but development expanded Sakhal to approximately 105 km² of traversable land and ice. When navigable water is included, its total playable area reaches approximately 236 km².
That does not mean Sakhal feels bigger than Chernarus in the traditional sense.
The developers intentionally designed its locations to encourage more player interaction rather than simply spreading everyone across a huge empty map.
Sakhal Changes How You Read a Map
On Chernarus, finding a town may solve your immediate problem.
On Sakhal, reaching a town while freezing can simply give you several new problems.
You need to think about:
- Heat and insulation
- Fire-making opportunities
- Food availability
- Frozen terrain
- Water routes
- Shelter
- Weather
- Travel distance between safe stopping points
The map also contains distinctive locations created specifically for Frostline, with the developers adding hundreds of Sakhal-specific environmental objects to give different points of interest their own identity.
Sakhal is especially rewarding once you already understand DayZ’s basic survival systems.
Nasdara: The New DayZ Badlands Map
This is the big map change arriving in October 2026.
DayZ Badlands launches on October 15, 2026, alongside Update 1.30, introducing the new region of Nasdara. Bohemia Interactive describes Nasdara as a 267 km² arid terrain built specifically for DayZ.
Instead of frozen Sakhal or green Chernarus, Nasdara moves DayZ into a much drier environment.
Badlands is planned to include:
- Sandstorms
- Motorcycles
- Rebuildable houses
- Radio and Morse-code gameplay
- Underground shelters
- New regional weapons and clothing
- New wildlife
- Regional diseases
Water management should also become particularly important.
One interesting addition is the rebuilding system. Bohemia says Nasdara contains more than 5,000 rebuildable houses, allowing survivors to repair or barricade selected structures instead of relying entirely on DayZ’s traditional fence-based base building.
For players who already know Chernarus by memory, Nasdara should bring back something DayZ veterans rarely experience anymore: being genuinely lost.
Which DayZ Map Should You Play?
There is no universal best map.
The better question is what kind of survival experience you want.
| If You Want… | Try |
|---|---|
| Classic DayZ survival | Chernarus |
| Best map for learning DayZ | Chernarus |
| Heavy forests and wilderness | Livonia |
| Harsh cold-weather survival | Sakhal |
| Frequent environmental pressure | Sakhal |
| A completely new map to learn | Nasdara |
| Desert-style survival | Nasdara |
| Traditional towns and coastal navigation | Chernarus |
For a completely new player, I would start with Chernarus.
Not because it is easy—it definitely is not—but because its coastline and major transport routes give you more recognizable reference points while you learn how DayZ navigation works.
How to Figure Out Where You Are
This is the part that frustrates almost every new DayZ player.
You spawn beside a road.
You see trees.
There is a small collection of houses.
You have absolutely no idea where you are.
Instead of immediately running in a random direction, start collecting clues.
Look for Town Signs
Settlement signs are one of the easiest ways to identify your location.
On Chernarus, many names appear in Cyrillic. Once you find a sign, compare its letters with a map or interactive map.
You do not need to learn Russian or Cyrillic completely. After enough time, you begin recognizing the shapes of familiar town names.
Follow Major Roads Carefully
Roads connect settlements and can help you recover when completely lost.
The problem is that roads are also predictable.
Other survivors know you may be traveling on them.
Use roads for orientation, but consider moving through nearby tree lines rather than walking directly down the center of a highway.
Use Railroads and Power Lines
Railroad tracks and electrical infrastructure can function almost like navigation lines.
Follow them long enough and they frequently lead toward recognizable locations.
That can be extremely useful when you spawn somewhere unfamiliar without a compass.
Find High Ground
A hill can tell you more than a road sign sometimes.
Look for:
- Church towers
- Apartment buildings
- Industrial chimneys
- Radio towers
- Coastlines
- Mountains
- Military structures
Once you recognize one major landmark, determining your position becomes much easier.
Should You Use an Interactive DayZ Map?
This depends on how you want to experience the game.
A popular third-party option is iZurvive, which provides interactive DayZ maps with town names, loot locations, water sources, military areas, GPS coordinates, and custom markers. Its Chernarus map also supports searching locations and working with GPS coordinates.
Interactive maps are extremely helpful when you want to:
- Meet friends.
- Locate a water source.
- Plan a long trip.
- Find military areas.
- Understand GPS coordinates.
- Mark a base or buried stash.
- Learn unfamiliar town names.
But there is a downside.
Using a detailed interactive map from your first minute in DayZ removes some of the mystery.
Getting lost, finding a road, recognizing a town for the first time, and slowly developing your own mental map are genuine parts of the DayZ experience.
A good compromise is to use an interactive map when you are truly stuck rather than constantly watching your position.
The In-Game Tourist Map Is Worth Using
DayZ also has an in-game Tourist Map.
It displays topography, tourist trails, major landmarks, and other navigational information. When paired with equipment such as a GPS receiver or compass, it can become a much more useful survival tool.
Using an in-game map feels very different from having every loot location open on a second monitor.
You still have to figure out where you are.
That small bit of uncertainty is part of DayZ’s appeal.
Good Places to Mark on Your Map
Once you start planning longer survival runs, do not only mark your base.
Useful locations to remember include:
- Clean water sources
- Vehicle locations
- Fuel stations
- Medical buildings
- Military zones
- Hunting camps
- Stashes
- Friendly bases
- Dangerous player activity
- Reliable food areas
- Backup shelters
Your personal map becomes more valuable the longer a character survives.
A well-marked water pump may eventually matter more than a military base full of weapons.
Is the DayZ Map the Same on PC, Xbox and PlayStation?
The official terrain selection is broadly shared across platforms, although community servers can create a very different experience.
PC has the biggest advantage when it comes to custom community maps because of its modding ecosystem. Maps such as Namalsk and Deer Isle are community creations rather than standard official DayZ terrains.
Console players primarily rely on the official terrains and whatever customization server owners can provide within the console environment.
When searching for map information, always check whether the guide is talking about an official map or a PC community map.
